All You Need to Know About Antioxidants Supplementation

Some people take antioxidant through fruit and vegetable in their diet, others depend on antioxidant supplements as the source of antioxidants in their diet. Some studies claim that antioxidant supplements aren’t necessary. So, it is very important to examine their advantages and disadvantages before you decide to continue taking them or stop.

What are antioxidants?

Normally, the body produces harmful chemicals called free radicals that can cause damage to the cells. Antioxidants are substances that inhibit the formation of these free radicals through the inhibition of a chemical reaction called oxidation.

When should you take them?

You should start taking them when your doctor recommends it. Especially if you’d on’t get enough antioxidants from your diet. Antioxidants and artificial supplements can be very good for many people who need high amounts of antioxidants and it can be hard for them to depend on the diet alone.
This includes:
  1. Pregnant women
  2. Breastfeeding women
  3. People who drink a lot of alcohol
  4. Drug users
  5. People who follow restrictive diets to lose some weight
  6. Old people
  7. People who have problems in absorption such as diarrhea and cystic fibrosis
Folic acid supplements and vitamins B12 supplements are especially essential for any woman who plans to get pregnant or for anyone on vegan diet. You should always try to take multivitamin supplements at the recommended dose instead of taking high doses from one type of vitamin.

The Advantages of Antioxidant Supplements

Antioxidants Studies have shown that taking antioxidant supplements can have numerous benefits for you. This is because they remove free radicals from your body which protects your cells from being damaged them. For example, one study found that selenium can reduce your risk of certain cancers such as lung cancer and prostate cancer. As free radicals accumulate over time, they may tend to affect different tissues all over your body. It was thought that antioxidants can help slow down the aging process but this is now more questionable. They were also thought to have an effect on preventing cardiovascular diseases, but this wasn’t really proved.

The Disadvantages of Antioxidant Supplements

Normally, when you take a nutrient from an external source, your body senses an increase in the concentration of that chemical and starts to produce smaller quantities of it. The same happens can happen when you take artificial antioxidants. However, those artificial supplements cannot make up for the reduction of the levels of antioxidants made by your body. Artificial supplements are just not as good at topping the production of these free radicals as natural antioxidants. Another problem is that too much of artificial antioxidant can harm your body instead of protecting it. For example, when you take antioxidants in high concentrations, they start acting as pro-oxidants. There is a study tat found that vitamin C supplements could act as a pro-oxidant when their concentration is high. This is because they react with other materials and can end up producing high amounts of free radicals. High amounts of water-soluble antioxidants can be very dangerous and because it may affect different parts of your body. For example, too much vitamin B6 can cause nerves damage while a high amount of vitamin C can lead to nausea and abdominal cramps. High amounts of vitamin C can also increase levels of iron that can interfere with the metabolism process inside your body. The effects of antioxidants on exercise can be some-what controversial. Although, many people claim that they enhance performance, there is no medical evidence of that. However, antioxidants can reduce some of the symptoms of oxidative stress.

Some Advice before getting Antitoxin Supplements

It is highly important to avoid replacing a healthy diet with artificial supplements. You should always try to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that contain all the nutrients and antioxidants that your body needs. You should ask your doctor if it is okay for you to start taking certain supplements. It is also very important that you let your doctor know of any symptoms that you experience. Although we tend to think of antioxidants as generally safe, they can still cause side effects, especially when they are taken at higher doses.
